500$ is quite a big budget!! you could get almost any phone on the market in that much. Besides a media player is included in almost every phone these days..I'd suggest taking a look at gsmarena.com. Its got a great set of reviews for phones and also have an indication for prices..

i heard that cracked versions work fine if you disable auto updates

Some from Nokia N series. I would suggest n73. Really great phone and will do all you need.

it's not recommended. why not wait for it's release in India?
Also, a new iphone may be launched this June (ahead of the regular Sept. releases)!
