Where is the secret of Firefox's success?

If we want to know the reasons behind the success of the Firefox, first we need to know the origins of Firefox browser. During the September 2002, a first version of the browser happened to release to the public asset called the Phoenix. The browser was dependant on the Gecko engine from the Mozilla Suite. After subsequent numbers of releases were made, the name was modified to the Firebird, but due to some legal dispute that arose because of the change of name, it was again changed to Firefox. The browser has gained a great deal in the publicity as the alternative browser to the Internet Explorer.

There are several factors contributing to the success of the Firefox but it is the marketing strategy in combination with the added features that made a lot complete difference in adopting this software by the users. One more thing that contributes to the success of the firefox is that the Internet Explorer after gaining the battle with the browser of the Netscape was left aside without any significant changes. This has of course changed with the latest version of the windows called the Vista and the new version of the Internet Explorer. It can be supposed that the Microsoft is attempting to correct few bugs and omissions in certain levels of the browser.

The other secret behind the success of the Firefox is the worthy features that are made available to the user and that enthusiastic community that helps it financially through the donations and scatters the word.

The two important reasons for me personally using the Firefox are because of the security and the extensibility that it offers. The Firefox extensions or the "add ons" are really GREAT! They let you to install the custom programs, which in turn let you to create a customized browser for you with the features which you find are required. The one feature - the capability to use the add ons is in my view, the basic reason for the success of the Firefox. Other Internet browsers have the same functionality but they fall short in the implementation part. Firefox implements these functionalities in a beautiful way compared to other Internet browsers. The other reason for its success is the security record of the Firefox. This doesn't imply that the firexfox hasn't got any security problems. The difference is that Firefox doesn't try to hide the problems. They are much transparent and are very quick to patch. The same cannot be said for the Internet Explorer, which indeed is a nightmare in terms of security.

Firefox is designed by the public process as the public asset. Participants have the liberty to feel that the Firefox is of their own. They are legally correct, since the assets of the Mozilla Foundation are dedicated legally and wholly to the benefit of the public. They are practically correct as well because the Firefox couldn't exist without this community; the two are wholly intertwined.

Re: Where is the secret of Firefox's success?

I think the only reason that Firefox has found tremendous success was Microsoft's lack of attention towards its web browser known as Internet Explorer. Firefox only leveraged on some points which IE didn't have like the extensions and open code design which everyone was free to experiment with and produce their own extensions and share with people. I find Opera another web browser from another company to be the best and fastest. Also Apple has released its browser which has some issues with PC versions but its a charm to use on a mac.
