I'd stick with XP. My experience with Vista was not a positive one, full of useless features that just weren't needed. It didn't run as well with games, and it had severe problems with some of my favorite programs which annoyed the hell out of me. You could try dual booting to get a better idea, or run it in in a virtual machine.
I'd recommend to try it on virtual machine too. Personally - I am not satisfied with performance of Vista. Maybe after SP2 it will get less resource insensitive.
I would suggest you install both and try it. Your PC config is good. I am running vista on 1GB ram, Ahtlon X2 1.9 GHZ and Nvidia chipset. Works fine but 2 GB will be very good for vista.
Vista is good when it comes to internet wifi problems and it looks beautiful. But Vista uses like 600 MB of ram on startup where as XP only uses ~200 something.
When u install fresh vista it might be a little slow in startup but then it addapts automatically. My laptop boots within 1 min to a workable desktop.
And i think after SP2 it will eat up more resources. I still remember that XP used to run on my 128 MB ram where as XP SP2 wont run as smooth as the earlier version of XP (before SP1).
if i were you i'd stick with windows XP only as i hate the sluggish environment and the thousands of compatibility issues you face when you install Vista... i don't think Vista will be able to survive for too long cos people in general hate it...
My opinion is little different than you guys out here!
I would have prefer to go for windows vista.
I personally use windows vista on my computer since past 7-8 months and have not found any difficulty with it.
I know that it doesn't support many applications running in the market but it happens with every operating system but still I know that it is not successful as windows XP.
I will suggest you to go for dual booting...your configuration is nice so you can choose anything choice is yours!
I would suggest you stick with xp. As it is vista is only glossy and good on the face and doesn't offer much in terms of performance. Also most of ms products are usually flawed until their service packs come out. Same was the case with XP when it was launched. Use XP for sometime and get SP3 which would be released ANYTIME now. Also all the nice looking stuff you see in vista can be found in XP too and you can use softwares like Vista Transformation Pack or Universal Vista Inspirat Brico pack for the glossy effect and the side icons menu.
Only advantage in vista would be its turbo boost ability which is actually of not much use as USB transfer speed is max 2 mbps.
only time can make difference as time goes the ms team will make vista stable and bug free then we can switch to vista easily

To be honest, I feel you should stick with Vista. I have Vista running on my laptop (Although, its specs are lower than yours) - 1 GB RAM. Its fast, but really not "that" good. Whereas, my desktop runs XP - 512 MB RAM, and the speed is absolutely perfect. If you can, go for 2 GB RAM and then go for Vista.
I Have Been Using Xp And Its The Best. Easy To Use. But I Feel Like Giving A Try A To Vista Now. I Like The Look And I Want To See What More Vista Is Offering. I Feel There Nothing Harmfull Trying It. Try Once (If You Are Not Going To Use A Original OS) If You Don't Like It Switch Back To Xp.
I've not had any problems with Vista, so when I always hear about people not getting on with it, I'm really surprised. You should try it for yourself - can you go back to XP if you don't get on with it?
if you are using vista then I think you might badly need to upgrade it,because vista might work slowly when you are using 1 gb ram one of cousins was using vista and he was using 2 gb ram for windows vista but he still had some problem with the speed. chakru
I don't had a good experience with windows vista, was horrible, it did not allow that I open up more than 2 programs at the same time, it is slow, the connection to the Internet is horrible, takes longer time to connect ... And it does not allow you to connect more than 3 times the same day ... Just have a good thing in view it is more visually beautiful ... Just that.
I prefer XP
i would keep with XP
though i prefer the easy interface of windows 98 more but i have to move with the world.
Vista is very difficult to navigate though its IE has new features.
you may also try having both installed on your machine!
Use a dual-boot with Windows XP and Windows Vista both on your system. Use windows XP for heavy working and important stuff.
Vista for now can be for leisure purpose and other entertainment and Media stuff!
I think your computer can support Vista if you want to switch. But for my opinion, I would rather stick with XP. Vista is still new and there may be bugs crawling in it. Just wait a bit longer if you want to upgrade.
I would have to say stick with XP. Its tried ,its tested and it supports all the major application software on the market. I've used Vista and its just not ready for everyday use.Try a dual-boot if you want, but I still feel you'd end up using XP more than Vista.
For me i will stay with Windows XP for the momonet. Cause most of my current software cannot running on Windows Vista. Vista is too security. Hard to you to install any additional software on that. So i preferred to stay with Windows XP now.
Windows XP is tested and proved sucessful OS available in the market. Vista is new and has some bug problems. Also it has performance issues with some programs and softwares. there are also compatiability issues with Vista. So hang on for a while with XP and then switch over to Vista
