Question: RAM confusuion
Hello friends……..
I have 512 DDR RAM chip. Now I want to add another 512MB RAM chip. I am planing to buy new RAM in 1-2 days.
I have few confusion:
1) Should the new RAM be of same frequency.
2) What are requirements to run Dual channel.

As far as I know frequencies of may differ – they both will work at lover RAM frequency then. Main thing is that both rams were same technology. And yes… It can depend on motherboard. If you have chance – better test before buy.
The best answear for your question is written in your Motherboard user manuel.
Thurn the page connected with the memory issue and you will se the table wich show memory modules that are compatibile with your MB.
I agree the admin. It’ll depend on your motherboard and whether it supports it. The frequencies do not need to match though. You can easily get the RAM checked before buying it, you get lifetime warranties on RAM’s as it is these days.
Yes you must take the same frequency. But if you need to increase you RAM with new frequency, check you motherboard . What maximum you motherboard can support?
Geez…whats the confusion…there are many sites that ..and I believe Crucial has one…where all you have to do is type in your machine model…and it will tell you exactly what kind of memory you need to have??…

I think it is better to check with your PC suppiler before you do anything or you can check the supplier who provide the new Ram to you. both of them are expert with the computer and they know the PC and RAM best, do you think so ?
as most have said before it depends on your motherboard.
there are a few different ram technologies, all are incompatible with each other (you can get PC100, PC133, DDR 266. DDR333. DDR444, DDR2 and now DDR3 chips)
pc 100 and pc133 are obsolete, you cannot get them any more, if its ddr 266, 333 or 400 then they care compatible with each other, but they will run at the slowest speed (if you have a ddr266 and install a ddr400 to your machine then they will both run at ddr266 speed, the same is true for DDR2 and DDR3)
if you are unsure then simply take the ram module that you have with you to the pc store and ask for an identical one, they will be able to match it for you.
buy a ram or same brand same freq and latency u lll get dual channel bt never mix frequencies u get BSOD errors and ur baord mit screwed sooon
To know the RAM frequency you can check the product manual or the BIOS setup. The frequency mustbe same else only the RAM present in slot 0 will be active the others will be disabled
