Question: Office Open XML and Open Document formats

Why there is two open document formats? Cant MS and OpenSource community find common talk and create one Open document format that could be compatible everywhere. Now what I see is some kind of stupid format wars that leads to misunderstandings and incompatibilities. Don’t you agree?

I saw lots off discussions about this problems and even signed a Petitions once against Open XML. But lost track of this thing. So whats new about that?
