The Question
Question: Can someone explain CALs ?
How dows CALs work ?
Lets say i have a windows server 2003 with 5 CALs (in a per server mode)
Does that mean i can only have 5 different users logged into a shared drive at a time ?
What happens when the 6th user tries to log in ?
Does a group permission count as one user ? or is it the user that is logged in that is actually using the licence ?

CALS may refer to:
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences – The name of a number of colleges at different universities
Computer-Aided Acquisition and Life-Cycle Support – A government and industry strategy
Client Access License – A Microsoft license technology
CALS DOD initiative — (Computer-Aided Acquisition and Logistics Support) A DOD initiative for electronically capturing military documentation and linking related information.
The CALS Table Model is a standard for representing tables in SGML/XML. Developed as part of the CALS DOD initiative.
The CALS Raster file format is a standard for the interchange of graphics data.
I don’t think it will be anything to do with agricultural colleges and life sciences at all.

hope it satisfies your query!
CAL is a licensing system to support multiple users. If you have purchased 5 CAL per server then only 5 registed users can use it. I suggest you buy 5 CAL per seat which will help the sixth user to login. Buying per seat will help you have more people login to your server but only 5 at a time.
