Networking refers to interconnection of computer systems for the purpose of sharing data. When computers are connected to a network the data that is present in one computer can be easily accessed from another computer. To build a network various hardware and software components are used.

The computer network has different names depending on the size of the network and the area of interconnection. Peer to peer network design features connection of stand alone computers, each of which can perform all the functions. Home networks use this network designs.

While connected to the network the computers in the network will communicate through a computer device which is called a protocol. A protocol defines and implements the communication between two computer systems. TCP/IP is the common internet protocol.
