Computer technology has evolved a lot in the past few years and in today’s date we are being made available with such technologies that have led to the production of huge number of things in less possible time. In the manufacturing industry, computer technology has made bigger achievements and that is why we have come across the thing called Computer Aided Manufacturing or CAM today. In fact CAM is an automated course of action with which a drawing, design or an object is converted to a computer decipherable code format. The machine with the help of these codes can manufacture the products easily in huge number and also in lesser time. Today wood mills, paper and textile mills are also using Computer Aided Manufacturing to produce many products.
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) have its roots to a technology developed in the year 1950 and was known as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) in which the computers were fed with data and it registered the implied commands in ‘punched paper tape’. Today CAM allows a product designer or a manufacturer to interact with the computer and give commands. As per the instructions of the manufacturer the computer can give the necessary outputs.
A CAM system is different from a normal computer and it is highly configured to take user instructions and convert them to prepare products. A CAM system is acquiescent with a CAD (Computer Aided Design) system and costs around 20,000 dollars. Generally high end machines will cost even more than this. It is far different from other machines and requires a 3 Dimensional surrounding to work efficiently. A CAM system is pre-configured from the industry to take the user commands. The product drawing and designs including all the specifications and calculations are fed into the computer. Within seconds it converts these into codes which can only be understood by the computer only and orders the production machines to produce the desired product. The main utility is that with the help of CAM it is possible to make client specific models or go for further customizations. Nowadays it has thus a huge demand and utilization in the aviation, locomotive and factory product manufacturing industries. In the field of engineering also, the CAM technology is lucratively used for extensive profitable needs.
CAM permits the computerized incorporation of the programmed mechanized course of action in the midst of other automation systems. These are like Integrated Computer-Aided Manufacturing (ICAM), Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS), Computer-Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), Manufacturing Process Management (MPM), Direct Numerical Control (DNC) and many others. Cyclic errands concerned in the mechanized programmed procedures are passed on to the machines that utilize the CAM system. It allows the personnel’s or laborers to give their time looking after the quality of production and also in maximizing the output of product development.
