Article: The basics of network security

A network of computers is formed to take advantage of the data that is present in the remote computer. The major purpose of a network is to enable the computers in the network to access data from other computers. This advantage of networking has led to security threats. The computers that are in the network will have sensitive data that has to be hidden form others. When this data is attacked by hackers it will pose a threat to the entire business itself. When setting up a network, remember that there are always hackers who are eager to break into the network and steal the information.

Network security is very essential to secure the network and the computers that are connected to the network. It starts with the computers that are connected to the network. If the hackers can reach a single computer in the network then the entire network can be accessed easily. So it is highly important to secure the computer.

Use of a good antivirus program is essential to safeguard the system that can be affected by common virus. Spywares and malwares can be detected and destroyed if an anti spyware program is installed. Firewalls are essential for a network to control the information entering and leaving the network. This firewall can monitor the information that are transmitted to and from the network and greatly helps in ensuring the security.

The network security is under threat when there is unauthorized access to the network. This is a big problem that has to be carefully eliminated to secure the network. Users will be provided with passwords to access the network. These passwords must be protected by the computer users so that hackers cannot get them. Also, the users must be restricted to unwanted data. This way you can control access to sensitive data of the network.

Backup copies of network data have to be maintained so that if any mishap occurs the data can be made available. Sometimes hackers may change the data in the network slightly so that they are not visible at the initial processing. They will become evident later. Another possible attack is that, the hackers may delete the data intentionally. In such cases a back up can be very useful.

The protection softwares that are used in the network have to be updated regularly so that the computer is protected against new viruses. New patches have to be installed from time to time so that the loop holes in the existing version can be eliminated.

Encrypting the data sent along the network is a great way to secure the transmitted information as the hackers cannot get the information even if they obtain access to the information. This requires special hardware and software that have to be installed in the network but will provide better security.

Educating the users of the network about the security issues can also help in protecting the network. The network security that is deployed must be flexible and rigid at the same time.
