Blu-Ray Disc:
- BD-ROM: The Read-only format for movie, games and software, games and movie
- BD-R: A Write-once recording format for PC data storage and HDTV recording
- BD-RE: A Rewritable format for PC data storage and HDTV recording and PC data storage
HD-DVD:
- HD-DVD ROM: A Read-only ROM
- HD-DVD-R: A Recordable ROM
- HD-DVD Rewritable/and
Recordable (the format is not complete)
- Hybrid Disc (is two-sided disc and must be flipped over. 8.5 Gb standard definition content one side and 30 GB HD-DVD on the other side). Also single-sided with 15 GB and 4.7GB layers only
Storage capacity:
Blu-Ray Disc:
- A Single-layer disc can hold 25GB
- The Dual-layer versions of these discs can hold up to 50GB
- Capacity can be increased as the additional layers are being added (there have been the announcements of four layers (100 GB) discs and the Sony has working on 200 GB disc)
- This added capacity creates more benefits and features for the customers in the future, that shows that the Blu-rays is a "long-term" format.
HD-DVD:
o 15 GB on the single-layer, single-sided disc
o 30 GB on the dual-layer, single-sided disc
Ability to enjoy and view the existing DVDs and CDs:
Blu-ray Disc: Yes, but dependant on format
